S3/VIA released a code drop a while back for xfree86 4.2.0. it needs to be ported to mesa 5.x to work with newer versions of xfree86. that work is being done on a branch of DRI cvs. for now if you want HW 3D you will need to use 4.2.0 with s3's code drop.
