I posted this to bugs.xfree.org and they got all mad, so I'm forwarding it to you. Please CC me on replies.
The adapter is: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro 215GP (rev 92), it's a PCI-only card. The iMac is a 333MHz G3, 96MB RAM, 6MB SGRAM. The problem occurs in mach64-0-0-6-branch, which is based on 4.3.0 AFAIK. When I start up X with DRI support, everything works fine and glxinfo tells me that DRI is enabled. When I run glxgears to measure fps, it runs for up to about a quarter of a second, and then freezes. The whole X server is stopped at this point. Running 'top' shows that 80-90% time is spent in glxgears. Killing glxgears revives the X server. I was unable to get strace to tell me anything useful about what glxgears or X itself was doing. Relevant stuff from Section "Device": Option "accel" "true" Option "XAANoScreenToScreenCopy" "true" # works around bug id #623 Driver "ati" ChipSet "ati" ChipId 0x4750 ChipRev 0x5c Option "ForcePCIMode" "True" Obviously disabling acceleration fixes the problem, but is dramatically slower. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to test. As a note, this looks pretty similar to bug #439772.
