Was the DRI tree ever synced with the XFree86 tree prior to 4.4.0? I
downloaded and installed 4.4.0 on a NetBSD system, thinking that
MergedFB
would just work but, unfortunately, it doesn't.

Nope, no mergedfb in 4.4. Mergedfb is only available in the DRI tree at the moment.

Is there a list somewhere of what's in the current DRI tree that isn't in XFree86 4.4.0? I think that would help answer some of the questions like this and help the folks working on the x.org tree figure out what they want to merge in from DRI CVS. An initial list is:

- GLX / device independent code
        - Client-side support for GLX_SGIX_fbconfig.
        - New DRI driver interface (backwards compatable with old
          interface).
- R200 driver
        - Support for 3D acceleration on Radeon IGP chipsets.
        - Support for 3D acceleration on MergedFB setups.
        - Support for GLX_SGIX_fbconfig.
        - Refactored texture combine environment code.
- R100 (radeon) driver
        - Support for GLX_SGIX_fbconfig.
        - Refactored texture combine environment code.
- MGA driver
        - Support for GLX_SGIX_fbconfig.
