The superbuffers working group worked on that extension for just over 2 years, and we're glad to be done! :)
Getting this implemented in software Mesa shouldn't be too painful, but it isn't something that will happen over night. Of course, patches are always welcomed. ;)
Getting it implemented in the hardware accelerated drivers will likely be a lot more painful. I honestly don't expect to see ANY non-beta drivers supporting it for at least a couple months.
