The speed reported by glxgears has improved by about a 100 frames a second over what it was last weekend.
I have started to go through the lessons at nehe for testing and I was unable to get past lesson 1.

At which point X would freeze. I was still able to log in remotely and shutdown the system.
It could be the issue is due to the Mesa tree rather than the driver - the fragment support is very new.
Could you try updating to the latest Mesa tree and newest r300_driver code ?
I updated this Sunday and it works fine for me..
Quick test of commenting out the calling of the ati fragment program stopped the lockup.
I am going to continue on this path of testing and will let you know what I find.
