What release of ubuntu?  what versions of xorg and mesa are inlcuded
with that release?  Does anything drm related show up in your dmesg
when the lockup happens?  do you have a second PC you can tail the
logs from remotely?  your best bet for r3/4xx support is probably to
use xorg/mesa/drm from cvs.
