First of all, I would advise going through existing development, to get a feel of what's done and what's left. There's quite a bit of reading about past development on the wiki. If you have issues figuring how to get there, or wonder how hard implementing a speficic feature is, just drop by on irc.freenode.net channel #nouveau and ask "what's the way to implementing feature X ?"
