The status is that few people are working on it but we don't believe that our work can go public yet. As we are short on time (real life keep us busy), we can't give any timescale for it, but we ain't far from somethings we might like to publish. Btw the first things we would release will be a dumb 2d modesetting driver with likely no acceleration at all. Then we will likely start looking at the 3d engine. If you want to help we will likely want to have kmmio dump of fglrx (while loading kernel module, starting X and launching some dumb gl apps).
