It just occured to me that this could be in some way related to [Bug 8641] New: interrupts not properly handled for VIA K8M00 / UniChrome Pro. This bug has to do with setting and clearing of interrupts not working properly. And according to description, rewriting the status register does not clear the interrupt. And the kernel disables the IRQ too. So just maybe, if someone fixes this, our bug could be fixed too!
