Hi, kernels 2.6.32-rc3 through 2.6.32-rc6 with i915.modesetting=1 give a black screen on my laptop with an i830M graphics chipset. No problems if I set i915.modesetting=0.
Some kernels of the 2.6.31-rcX series and kernel 2.6.32 that I tried with KMS enabled, gave a flickery, unusable screen or a displaced one. Still, I consider this new behaviour a regression. Logging into the machine by SSH, shows that everything works fine, even X starts up, I just don't see anything on the screen. To my surprise, the external VGA connector delivers a signal. I have seen a mail on this list (dri-devel) that might be related: subject: KMS + i915 + modeset=1 fails to detect correct output on laptop, blank/black screen From: Denys Fedoryschenko <de...@vi...> - 2009-10-27 01:12 So, if I understand correctly, there is only one output device enabled, which is the first in a list of device the code finds. In my case that would be the external connector as it is shown by `dmesg`, to be found at the end of this mail. If you need more information, to address this issue, please let me know.
