3ware has GPL'd versions of drivers for some of its products -- notably the 7506 series. If one wanted to attempt a port of such a beast, what would be the recommend method? Please keep in mind I suspect this would be a singular effort, so the method of having 2 teams (1 to write spec and 1 to implement) wouldn't work here.
I've seen some of the hassles involved with (among others) OpenBSD and IBM/SCO, so I'm tempted to not even fully consider this if I can't just simply rewrite the driver from scratch for Solaris without being accused of having the GPL text at hand and copying. Would my only method be to write a spec first and implement from that? Is that sufficient to not be accused of copying code?
