I have no idea wy, but after I disabled the old IDE (ata) drive in the
bios and removed it as an option to boot from (again, in the bios) my
system came up booting off the SATA2 drive.

I detached the old ata drive from the rpool and attached another sata2
drive. The system is running well now.

I have absolutely no idea why this did not work yesterday.
Ah well, it does now ;-)
So, the nv_sata driver is OK after all.
