Eventually I got back round to installing OpenSolaris (now 2009.06) on this computer with Asus P5E-VM HDMI (Attansic L1 GbE) again,
And this time, with atge-2.6.5, it works like a charm! DHCP connection established even before the reboot :-) Thanks for the great work!
