hmm. Dug a bit deeper. drivers/rtc/interface.c states that it must be positive.
I'm guessing it is only signed for historical reasons.
So I will take this patch as it stands.

Applied to the togreg branch iio.git - initially to be pushed out as
testing for the autobuilders to play.
