Actually the 'extra info in the binlog' trick was Facebook, not Google. I had my companies confused. Maybe that's because Mark was at one and is now at the other. :-)
For whatever reason, I'm failing to find a link to the info now. But I remember that they were tossing some extra info into the binlog that helped with cache purges (or fetches?) on the other end.
