It does sound like a configure script problem. I have a SuSE host building with no problem... but I'll see if I can help you track this down. Can you send your config.log?
configure checks to see if you have libboost_program_options or libboost_program_options-mt. Either one is fine - on redhat, they install two different versions of the lib, a thread safe and a non-thread safe. So not finding libboost_program_options-mt is perfectly valid.
