We could do this too and set the column default to NULL. But this could break some application in the same way since it will not be 0000-00-00 returned any more. So I guess the question is which is the worst of 2 evils ;)
FWIW: As someone who uses 0000-00-00 in a legacy application, I would much rather want NULL to some other random date.
