This is handled deep in the Drizzle kernel, and the current implementation
wasn't designed with the ability for plugins to handle this portion of work.

Right, except the master takes a performance hit due to having to introduce
locks around the stream. So we're kind of leaning towards having downstream
handle the buffering so we can avoid the concurrency issues.
