I don't know if this is what you're asking but: My experience with
MySQL and MariaDB is that from a branched bzr repo you can build an
RPM by:
 - make source tarball
 - make rpm/deb/binary tar out of source tarball

If that doesn't work, then the repo is broken. (Does happen sometimes
with eg. the Facebook patch, as they don't produce source tarballs
rather just build rpm or whatever directly out of the repository.)
