I have had the current code working recently. The client must be set to use the newer auth (this is an option you have to specify).

Isn't that based on Windows domains and security handled by the OS?

Seriously, it makes for a good default installation when compared to
mysql shipping with empty root password. If you have shell login, you
can use database.

That's what peercred auth is for. ;)

The original question remains thoug (and now I got qurious too): What
is it supposed to do?
