One other thing to keep in mind... JIRA issues without patches often look like requests for someone else to do work. I tend to ignore them 'till there is somethign to look at.
The mailing list is a better place to say 'how do people feel about changing XXX' and see if it is a non-starter, something other people want to help with, or don't care one way or the other.
