Hello Lina, the email adress gets verified by this step. This is not different from any other registration process. The solution avoids week passwords. When logging in at that stage, the user has no more rights then an anonymous user. Specifically, he has no right to publish to any collection in default configuration. This has to be given by an DSpace user with admin role before a new user can start to use his account.
We plan to allow publishing to a special collection already at this stage. We will have to check for vandalism in this case constantly, but we guess it is worth a try in raising participation for our project.
