I too am getting this error, but none of the fixes above worked for me.
My system:
Ubuntu 9.10 - 32 bit
DSpace 1.5.2 (Source Release)
JRE: Sun 1.6.0_16
Apache Tomcat/6.0.24
Result of echo $JAVA_HOME:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-sun-6
Getting error on: http://localhost:8080/xmlui/admin/epeople
