Dorothea Salo commented on DS-520:
----------------------------------

Thanks, Tim!

Here are some concrete suggestions:

- In the Bulk Policy tool, allow for bulk revocation of access as well as bulk
granting. This situation came up because a content provider wanted an entire
collection changed from anonymous to campus-only access. I could add the
campus-only permissions on all the items in the collection, but I couldn't
remove anonymous access except item-by-item, bitstream-by-bitstream.

- A "Remove anonymous access (to everything in this collection)" button might
be the 80/20 point here. I'm guessing it would be the commonest use.

- For bitstreams, it would be nice to have a "conceal" button. What this would
do is both set READ permissions on that bitstream to its submitter group and
its collection-admin group, as well as flipping a bit that conceals the
bitstream from the web UI except to those who have permission to see it. The
use case here is that items in this collection contain consent forms that need
to be confidential, and that the casual web surfer doesn't even need to see.
Currently, DSpace can only revoke access permissions to these bitstreams; it
can't conceal them.

- Please allow more than one group to be selected at a time in the
group-selection box! Control- and shift-clicking don't work.

- I think (caveat: I haven't tested) the ideal UI for per-item bitstream
permissions lets the admin select the bitstreams to work on first (concealing
those where it doesn't make sense to set permissions, e.g. THUMB and TEXT
bundles) and then set permissions for only that set of bitstreams. This should
be considerably less clicky, as well as less confusing.

>
> Based on a tweet from Dorothea Salo.
> She asks for the ability to perform bulk authorization removal or assignment
> across several DSpace Items/Bitstreams at once -- this request goes beyond
> what the current Bulk Policy tool allows one to do.
> Here's a video showing how difficult this authorization process currently is
> when you want to change the authorization rights on 4 different bitstreams
> attached to the same item. As you can tell from the amount of clicking
> around, and one-by-one changes, this current interface is quite confusing,
> and can become rather frustrating.

> Currently, our Bulk Policy tool just lets you change bitstream/item rights
> across an entire collection (or site-wide). Is there a way to clean up these
> interfaces to provide a better workflow for dealing with Bulk Policy changes?
