Thanks for reviving this: The other tickets you link to all talk about item
pages. This requests is for search & browse results.
The goal is to make it clear to people looking at search & browse results
whether bitstreams are available or not.
I don't see immediately how discovery is addressing this. However, there is a
feature in Mirage related to this request:
You can actually enable thumbnail view for search & browse results in Mirage.
But I'm not 100% sure if it currently makes it entirely clear to people when
they are dealing with metadata only vs metadata with files items. I also don't
know how well this plays with embargo: let's say that an embargoed bitstream is
attached to a file, what kind of thumbnail is shown?

xmlui.theme.mirage.item-list.emphasis = file
I suggest that we change xmlui.theme.mirage.item-list.emphasis from metadata to
file on demo.dspace.org so we can investigate this further.
