Tim Donohue commented on DS-1553:
---------------------------------

Bram, yes, I agree with you on all points.

I was mostly wanting to clarify two things:

1. It is possible to use Tomcat 7.0.29 with DSpace with "-Xms1024M -Xmx1024M"
set (NOTE: the last line of the description above implied it may not be
possible to run DSpace on 7.0.29). But, the caveat is that you may notice
higher memory usage and need to unnecessarily bump up the memory to compensate
for that. So, it's possible, but not necessarily recommended to use
7.0.28/7.0.29.

2. I wanted to try to clarify which version(s) of Tomcat seem to solve these
memory issues. It sounds like we've only verified 7.0.40 or later solves the
issues (but it's possible that 7.0.30 or above may work?). But, I agree here
we should add a note to the documentation recommending a later version of
Tomcat to avoid these memory issues.

> When using Tomcat 7.0.29, heap space shoots up to over 600MB when starting up
> DSpace, only deploying the XMLUI exploded war. Even without SOLR.
> Using Tomcat 7.0.40, this is no longer the case and just uses 50MB of heap.
> Right now, I'm not sure whether this is just a local configuration problem,
> or whether there's a serious reason to put a warning in the docs to ensure
> that people don't use 7.0.29.
> Would be great if anybody is able to reproduce/confirm this excessive memory
> usage on tomcat 7.0.29.
> Java opts for 7.0.29 -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m (won't even run without declaring
> more heap space).
