Just added a new PR to fix the changes in the original PR (#364):

This PR ensures that withdrawn items are still exported to CSV. It still fixes this bug, and it also enhances the logging (as suggested by Sam above).
If someone wants to give it a quick look, please feel free. I've done some light testing and it all seems to work fine. I'll merge it in the morning if no one gets to it before then.

We found an issue attempting to export the metadata from a collection with many items on a DSpace 3.2 instance upgraded from DSpace 1.6.
Way to replicate:
1) Add a couple of items to a collection
2) Set column archived="f" in the "item" table
3) Export metadata CSV
The user will receive a silent error. The full stack trace is eaten so it is...
