With a default deployment with all webapps installed, in catalina.out several lines as such appear: log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (someclass). I have seen others mentioning these lines in their posts in dspace-tech. My assumption was that an appender might already be in use by another webapp. Then, the warning would appear with certain combinations of webapps installed, only if xmlui and jspui or sword and swordv2 were deployed together but not when either of them is deployed separately. However, it turned out, that these warnings belong to specific webapps. To find out I moved all directories from webapss to webapps.tmp, then moved back in to webapps separately one by one, restarting tomcat7 each time. Obviously there were other issues when e.g. deploying xmlui without solr, but that did not matter for this test. Each time I searched catalina.out for "No appenders could be found for". When the string was found, I removed catalina.out and tested the next webapp. Here are my results: log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (org.dspace.servicemanager.DSpaceKernelInit). This line gets thrown by jspui and sword respectively. log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (net.sf.ehcache.config.ConfigurationFactory). This line is the result of rest being deployed. I tried out to find the log4j.properties file associated to these webapps, but I was not successful. Maybe that is just the issue the Warning tries to express, these webapps try to log something but have not been configured at all. The full three line message is as follows: log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (org.dspace.servicemanager.DSpaceKernelInit). log4j:WARN Please initialize the log4j system properly. log4j:WARN See http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/faq.html#noconfig for more info. I guess log4j-jspui.properties, log4j-sword.properties and log4j-rest.properties should be supplied with each webapp respectively or the dspace/config/log4j.properties file needs to be adjusted somehow.
