It sounds like you want to "batch import". If you search the General listserv archive, you'll find a discussion of the process from about a month ago; Keith Pickett started a discussion on Feb 22 with the subject heading "New to DSpace" and the threads continue on Feb 23.
There are basic instructions on the DSpace website: go to Resources/Training Materials and look for "Import and Export" in The DSpace Course presentation collection.
