To answer some of your questions...
Dspace is generally considered a 'complete' solution, it is a web application
with a user interface. Fedora focuses on the back-end storage, it requires a
front-end client of some sort to provide the interface. There is a proposal
that Dspace will be able to function as a client for Fedora in the future.
