Improving the usefulness of the error reports from the metadata import tool is 
one of the things on our to-do list for version 1.8.  As you've found, the 
error messages aren't too helpful in 1.6 and 1.7!

To track down the error, you'll need to look in your 
[dspace]/log/dspace.log{datestamp} file.  There should be an error report from 
the time that you uploaded the file.  If you can send this, we should be able 
to work out what is going on.

The usual issue is that one of the headings is incorrect (e.g. title rather 
than dc.title), but seeing as it works for a single row but not multiple rows, 
this seems les likely.
