Hi,
Postgres is widely used Open Source database. If you want to choose Dspace you
can definately go with Postgres.
Currently, A php/mysql version of DSpace is not technically feasible as Core
modules of Dspace are built on JAVA.

A php/mysql version of DSpace would have wide appeal, I would bet.
