on board a new Product Manager to oversee Open Repository.
The position will be based in London and will report to me.

Company and position overview
Open Repository is a service from BioMed Central to build, launch, host
and maintain institutional repositories for organisations. Built upon
the latest DSpace repository software the service has been designed to
be flexible and cost-effective. BioMed Central's economy of scale makes
it possible for organisations that could not otherwise afford to, or
lack the infrastructure or technical capacity in-house, to run their own
repositories.
BioMed Central is an open access publisher and committed to providing
immediate free access to peer-reviewed scientific, technical and medical
research, and part of Springer Science + Business Media.
Job duties:
The Product Manager, Open Repository (PM) is responsible for taking Open
Repository to the next level by ensuring the product continues to
develop technically, existing clients are renewed and new ones brought
on board in line with the strategy. The PM will be both technically and
commercially astute, targeting sales and marketing effort as well as
guiding product development in order to drive this part of the business
forward.
The successful candidate will develop strong working relationships with
our customers, acting as the face of Open Repository.
The PM will make sense of, analyze and prioritise business requirements,
customer requirements, developments in institutional repository software
and related fields (such as digital preservation and metadata
standards), and developments within DSpace software specifically, and
work with the technical team to create short-term and long-term project
roadmaps.
* Represent Open Repository at industry events and conferences as a
speaker where possible, delegate or exhibitor
* Manage and maintain the development roadmap for Open Repository
* Assist the Sales Managers and marketing team with their activities.
* Document all project developments and make regular progress reports to
the business as required.
* Ensure all project documentation is kept up to date
* Develop a complete and thorough understanding of both the product and
repository user community in order to:
o Provide staff training
o Provide customer training, including creating and maintaining customer
training documentation
o Represent the project at external meetings, conferences and workshops
o Act as the "voice-of-the-customer" within the business and externally
* Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of institutional
repositories and related fields (such as digital preservation and
metadata standards, CRIS systems).
* Define technical specifications and oversee graphical mock-ups.
Job requirements:
Essential:
* An understanding of Open Access business models and the role of
institutional repositories
* Experience in repository technology, library or publishing
communities.
* Demonstrable project management skills
* Strong commercial awareness
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills and organizational
skills
* Developed people management and customer service skills
* Ability to work both independently and within a dynamic team
* Flexibility in reacting to rapidly changing project requirements
* Strong presentation and networking skills
* Excellent IT literacy
Desirable
* An understanding of web applications and server management
* A working understanding of the Java programming language and Java
technologies
* An understanding of tools used by today's researcher/librarian
* A working understanding of metadata schemas (eg Dublin Core)
* A working understanding of Linux
* Experience with open source development communities
* Understanding of web usability issues
* Experience of HTML authoring packages (such as Dreamweaver) and
graphics packages (such as Photoshop)
