The University of Michigan Library IT is hiring a Systems Programmer to do
software and systems development work in conjunction with a new initiative
on campus to collect, store, and distribute research data for the
university community.
The position will involve working with the library's existing large-scale
digital library systems - in particular, our popular archive service, Deep
Blue - and involvement on a project team in the library that will interact
directly with researchers to design and launch the service.
The focus of the position, approximately 75-80%, will be to develop the
technological aspects of the service, working with researchers and
librarians to gather, transform, archive, and provide access to research
data sets. The new system will use the same powerful DSpace platform
underlying Deep Blue, so the project will entail working closely with
current Deep Blue staff. Secondary tasks will be shared with others in Core
Services and will include, for example, web server configuration, other
miscellaneous development, system troubleshooting, preparing documentation,
and monitoring technology trends.
Ideal candidates for these positions would be comfortable developing
complex software using languages such as Perl, Java, and/or Ruby and would
have experience with Linux systems and handling large amounts of data.
The individual hired will join an existing, highly talented staff of five
in Library IT Core Services who are responsible for application and storage
infrastructure and data handling. Core Services operates a growing Linux
infrastructure consisting of approximately 50 servers and over 1.5 PB of
storage spread across three data centers.
The University of Michigan Library is nationally known for its leadership
in the digital library field and provides a forward-thinking, energetic
working environment.
Minimum required qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or
equivalent amount of related education and experience; experience and
comfort with working in groups; demonstrated programming skills in a modern
programming language; strong analytical and troubleshooting skills;
excellent written and verbal communication.
The position is 2-year term-limited with the possibility of extension.
The University of Michigan offers competitive salaries and a generous
portfolio of benefits.
