Hi Hrafn, I'm afraid DSpace isn't particularly good at importing only bitstreams (OTOH, it's very good at importing only metadata). Apart from Emilio's suggestion to use the submission process with a curation task which is in my opinion very tiresome, I'd recommend preparing a minimal set of metadata in a CSV file instead and creating the metadata-only items that way (using Batch Editing Tool as described in the FAQ). Afterwards it's much less clicking to upload bitstreams to existing items than to go through the submission process. There is a downside - no automatic extraction of metadata. However, in my experience, most PDF metadata is bad anyway, so unless you have a single source that fills them in, you're not missing much.
