Hi, Robin,

The items being cataloged are books dating from the 12th - 19th
centuries plus ancient and modern artifacts, art and other items.
Evaluators are examining each and making notes about anything
particularly interesting or important that aren't noted elsewhere in the
entry. The notes become part of the record of the item. There are
separate notes made by the collector (who donated his entire collection)
copied from his hand-written index cards.

For example, a note would be something like "this is the author's
personal copy," or "this is a presentation copy given to so-and-so," or
perhaps commentary about the printing, binding or special features of a
given volume of interest.

I've created local metadata definitions for more than a few pieces of
information to be recorded; e.g., the original publisher's price, the
price paid for the item and the current estimated value, the seller's
name and location, the evaluator, the date evaluated and so on.

It's a little tough not being an academic institution, you know, gotta
make your needs fit and add on what you think is important.

Stuff like that, eh?

Thomas
