Sorry for the lack of information! I am running dspace 3.1, XMLUI interface.
I am running discovery with a cron job that updates the index every morning. Until that is run I am not seeing new additions it in the browse index or search index. I can use the handle that is provided after the submission. On the front page Poar.twu.edu I just submitted one - Koffi, Lacei - and received the email that it was submitted: "You submitted: Adolescents' perceptions of fathering factors that influence identity development. To collection: Dissertations & Thesis Your submission has been accepted and archived in DSpace, and it has been assigned the following identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/11274/90 Please use this identifier when citing your submission." When I "browse" that collection by author/title I do find it that way just not in the full search box options or through searching the full POAR index. Hi David, sorry if I'm missing something here because my use case doesn't require me to use the submission workflow, but AFAIK, when you add an item, it should be added to the index immediately (which happens thanks to events which can be hooked and acted upon). Although I know there are some things that will not be updated (e.g. XMLUI browse pages), the item should be properly indexed and locatable after it is added. Ideally, the manual index update would be only used in cases where you manually write to the database directly and you need to force an index update. Furthermore, you didn't specify which DSpace version and interface you're running and whether you have Discovery enabled - all being important information.
