A couple of points:
(a) students may not have an entry in your authority control system, but their
thesis advisors almost certainly do (but their students may not credit them
using the name they publish under)
(b) you may be able to deposit using the SWORD interface from a system that has
access to student records.
(c) if institutions issue email addresses to students, the submission of a
thesis is typically an end-of-life event for that email address, so collect a
second on from the student
(d) anyone can get an ORCID id (it's like an ISNI) and institutions can get
them for all staff and students.

As a Librarian I value Authority control, but when it comes to self-submission
and student work how have you been able to handle that?
What system are you using to connect for the Authority file?
What happens when someone wants to submit something and either their name or a
subject isn't in the system? What is the next step?
I really like the idea of Linked Open Data and connecting our authors to say
VIAF(Virtual International Authority File) or some other Maintained standard
but just haven't seen this in action and any real best practices...
