DS-1648 deals with the problem Mark described. The related PR is probably not a good implementation of this, but it describes the problem.
The current implementation of ORCID integration in DSpace is a rather simple addon in form of an authority server. The solution connecting contributors to authors will be far from trivial as it will require recognizing contributors as first-class entities. Then associating then with users will be relatively easy. This problem is definitely something we're aware of. The data model used in DSpace-CRIS is one approach that already recognizes authors as first-class entities in DSpace.
