Thanks for that Eddilbert, that did work for my setup. I was able to get rid of most of the side bar by editing the file [dspace-sourcce]/dspace/modules/xmlui/src/main/webapp/themes/dri2xhtml-alt/dri2xhtml.xsl
and uncommenting <xsl:import href="core/navigation.xsl"/> and then recompiling DSpace.
