Hi,

I can verify that you *MUST* enable HTTPS on the backend if you want to 
access the backend via an IP address.  Without HTTPS, it's possible the 
basics will work, but I know that you will not be able to login to the 
system until you enable HTTPS.

It's only possible to (easily) run DSpace in HTTP only mode if you are 
using "localhost" (i.e. in a development environment).  (I say "easily" 
because there might be workarounds to this, but I cannot tell you how to 
achieve that... and honestly any site on the web that allows for 
authentication should use HTTPS if you want to keep your site secure)
