If these records aren't actually going into your catalogue, I would be
truly tempted to rethink this decision. If they are, though, it makes
sense to do the complicated record and derive the simple record.

I would look at Terry Reese's MARCEdit package:
<http://oregonstate.edu/~reeset/marcedit/html/index.php>. It should
help you go in either direction.
