I would recommend that your pg_dump and pg_restore be done with the same version of the DSpace release. Release 1.5 data structure is a bit different (as are all the major releases of DSpace in my
experience).

SQL databases can be tricky, so you really want to make things as simple as possible. Migrating your data between the Postgres database is the most important, so why complicate the matter with not
only DSpace and it's data structure but the version of Postgresql.

You can, on a happy note, migrate your Postgresql database from one version of Postgres to a newer version using pg_dump and pg_restore. Postgresql recommends you perform your pg_backup using the new version (that's if you run two versions of Postgresql on the same server).

Unless your server supports UTF-8, Postgresql 8.2 and 8.3 does not support UTF-8 via the Postgresql code itself. (Hence there is no UTF-8 flag in the ./configure script for installing Postgresql 8.2/8.3. )

That's my $.02 worth.

Good luck.

We're in the process of upgrading from 1.4.2 to 1.5, and we're also moving to a new server.

We've got 1.5 up and running and we're trying to figure out the best way of migrating our data. Is it possible to do a pg_dump from the 1.4.2 server and do a pg_restore on the 1.5 server? Or will 1.5's new db schema prevent this?

Thanks for any response, I have not been able to find any documentation for this scenario.
