It is said that there are no specific server requirements for a DSpace
installation except that the server should be able to run Unix or a Unix
Type OS. The pilot Institutional Knowledge Repository (IKR) at IBS Ahmedabad
is thus available on a minimal server configuration as follows :

   - P-IV @2.4 GHZ, 256 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD
   - Fedora Core 4 Linux, Apache Tomcat 5.5.17, Apache Ant 1.6.5,J2EE 1.4
   SDK
   - Postgres SQL 8.1.3
   - DSpace Version 1.3.2 ( Digital Repository Software )

Type of documents available in this pilot IKR are mainly Word, PDF, PPT
documents. The sizes of the documents being archived and accessed vary from
100Kb to 2.5 MB. (approx)

The pilot Institutional Knowledge Repository currently available at
http://202.131.96.39:8080/dspace is slowly growing, in size (number of
records) and usage (concurrent number of users). It is observed that for an
IKR server, the storage capacity (hard disk size) would be the limitation
for the repository size and memory capacity (RAM) would be the limitation
for the number of users simultaneously accessing the repository.

Disk Space occupied by the Operating System, Prerequisite Software's and IR
Software DSpace is approximately 10 GB. As the Disk Capacity was 40 GB,
available space is approximately 30 GB. The current data of approx 200
records in the Pilot IKR occupies 0.7 GB = 1 GB approx. Allowing
disk-space for indexes, backup still gives scope for a large number of
records ( which takes a lot of time to collect & enter !!)

Assuming the type, number and size of documents that are being accessed are
parameters that determine the number of simultaneous users. *Are there any
research-papers/ experiments/ indications on how many users can be supported
simultaneously on a specific minimal configuration? *

* *

I would be grateful if I can have some comments on the same.
