They are stored fine in metadatavalue.text_value, as are all the other  
metadata fields. I'm guessing that because the other metadata fields  
don't get used as GET params very often (whereas Browse By Author then  
clicking an author does), you're right about the URL handling.

Yeah, the list is fairly smart like that, you won't get duplicates.
