Hi List,
I have some metadata registry and digital imaging questions from our herbarium
project. I sent those to the code4libraries list and received some nice
suggestions, but it hasn't resolved all the issues. Jason from KUMC suggested
me to send it to the DSpace-tech list.
We are working with the Biology department to add herbarium metadata and images
to DSpace. We already have some metadata in excel sheet created by the Biology
Dept and they are in loose Darwin Core and kind of free style.
I would like to do data transformation (transform it to a mixture of DC and
Darwin Core possibly) and batch import the xml to DSpace.
Andrew and Janson from the code4librarians list suggested me to save the Excel
spreadsheet to a CSV file and use a parser (e.g.
http://tds.terkko.helsinki.fi/utils/ ) that will read the values from that
spreadsheet and produce a dublin_core.xml file. Then we could pack the image
files and metadata for batch import.
Here are my remaining questions:
- Where should I add the Darwin Core metadata (in the Dublin_core.xml as
well)? It seems that it only has dcvalue element. Can someone point me to some
record examples with mixed schema in DSpace?
- Is it preferable to use Dublin Core and add several Darwin Core elements
(considered as local elements?) to the registry, or to use Darwin Core schema
(add the schema to the registry)? Even the Darwin Core elements could be made
searchable in our DSpace, it will be problematic for harvesting. Anyway, what
is the best practice in this case?
Thanks very much,
Sai
