Hello Ian, there are utility methods to retrieve dates in a suitable display format, as e.g. it is done in the browse listings, take a look at [dspace-source]/dspace-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/content/DCDate.java and the respective utility classes for jspui and xmlui.
