just to make sure what and where you did it. As you wrote you have 
"recompiled" I assume you did:

Edit dspace.cfg in
[dspace-source]/dspace/config

run mvn package
run ant init_configs
run [dspace]/bin/dspace index-init

Btw which theme are you using?
