The recommended approach to upgrading across multiple versions of DSpace 
is detailed in a note at the top of the current DSpace Upgrade 
Documentation (see the "If you are upgrading across multiple versions" 
note):

If these instructions don't make sense, please let us know.  We're 
continually trying to improve our Documentation. So, if something could 
use clarification or enhancement, we'd definitely like to know.
