What about hiding them in your theme using XSL? You could match this in DRI: /document/meta/userMeta/@authenticated='yes' and hide any items with the specified parent collection. To do that, you'd probably have to use the document() call on each item's mets.xml (url: /metadata/handle/123456789/123/mets.xml)
